Energy vs Environment

We all know that oil is the driving force behind most of the economies there are worldwide. Industries, machinery, transportation among much more other things. To show you just how much the globe is dependent on oil, here are a few facts;

  • Oil alone accounts for about 5terawatts of the total 15terawatts global annual energy consumption, this makes oil directly responsible for about 2.5% of the world’s GDP, which translates to providing a third of humanities energy supply.
  • Oil and gas companies take about 40% of all seaborne cargo, have millions of miles of pipelines on the planet to distribute crude oil, refined products, and natural gas, injecting huge investments, businesses and providing employment opportunities to thousands.
  • Oil producing countries have generated and amassed a huge amount of wealth from the mining and export of oil. One only has to turn to the middle east to see evidence of this.

That just to mention a few was to show you how deeply routed the world’s businesses, industries and way of life are embedded to oil.

Environmental concerns about the waste from uses of oil and it’s products has on our planet has brought to our attention the need to find new cleaner sustainable energy sources to stop further degradation of our planet. Immediate phasing out of oil is unquestionable considering it’s contribution to the much-needed energy.

The modern cleaner energy sources lag behind significantly in comparison to oil and gas, the reason being they are still a bit expensive, not as readily available as oil and not much is known about them, greatly limiting their use.As we know not many people bother themselves with environmental conservation or recycling because they don’t really see much or feel the direct effects of environmental degradation.

As we know not many people bother themselves with environmental conservation or recycling because they don’t really see much or feel the direct effects of environmental degradation. I encourage the few that know this continue to share their concerns, talk to other around them and contribute to the care of the environment around them any way they can no matter how small or big. Exercise proper use of water, plant a tree, install solar panels, use the right type and portions of fertilizers and pesticides, properly dispose your garbage and recycle.

With the budget cuts in the US interior department’s budget, my hope is that the science community keeps working with what they have, I understand that this slows the development process but lets keep spreading the word to take care of the environment around us and beyond, keep an eye on practices that still explore natural resources, speak out against illegal exploitation and together help look after mother earth.

The White House wants to cut the Interior Department budget by about 12 percent as the Trump administration shifts the agency’s focus toward promoting fossil fuel drilling and extraction on public lands and in federal waters. The budget proposal released Tuesday would reduce Interior’s funding to $11.6 billion in fiscal 2018 — about $1.6 billion…
